Gene Cafe CBR-101 Coffee Roaster (Red)

$ 625.00

Gene Cafe Home Coffee Roaster

The Gene Cafe CBR-101 has established itself as an excellent roaster capable of producing approximately half a pound of uniformly roasted coffee (250g). Ideal for both the novice, and more experienced home coffee roaster.  With simple time and temperature knob controls, and easy-to-view glass chamber, the user is able to watch the full progression of the roast.  The CBR-101 uses a unique vortex twisting, off-axis chamber rotation which assures complete distribution of the green coffee during roasting. This motion is one of the main reasons for the roasted coffee's uniform color.

Been using for years ... bought a new one cause ...

I bought my machine in early 2014 and love it. Don't want to be with out one. So in dog years ... that's old. I bought a new one thinking my old one was bound to die after a good long life. Gave it to a buddy who has cleaned it up inside and out and it will probably last years. My friend is very adept at mechanical stuff. I am not. He credits its long functionality to me following the directions. Letting the machine cool down to near room temp before roasting another batch. Keeping the batches down to 200 gr per. I could have bought a more expensive roaster and thought about it, but this one does everything I want. Produces great coffee. After figuring out how to allow for a bit of coasting to a higher level, I hit a City + or Full City as needed every time. Highly recommend this machine.

Best intermediate upgrade from FR500!

The roaster performs as expected, already roasted some Brazilian and Indonesian coffee with great repeatable results. Highly recommend the roaster, it is very easy to use and control the outcome.

A bit reliant on user for safety

First the good, it does it's job well keeping the beans at an even convection heat without burning some & under roasting others & catches all the husk without you realizing it.
I have seen someone's review in the distant past of a disasterous meltdown or fire which occurred. I wonder if in reaction to this the manufacturer has gone in the wrong direction by installing a dead man switch as opposed to more thermally insulated parts & circuit breakers. This means instead of simply plugging in & running it on non flammable surface away from any combustables unattended you have to keep hitting a button every few minutes to prevent premature cooldown mode. The instructions which say to never operate outside should be the opposite since even without visible smoke the detectors go off early & coffee roaster fumes are known to be toxic by the industry. It would've been more apt to say only use outside during dry weather but always store inside in dry locations sheltered from dust & moisture. Probably would be better having an kill switch & alarm trip if heat well over roast temp is detected indicating combustion event. It's not silent of course the beans & motor & swinging part will remind you it's running. As far as roasters go it may be the most professional consumer model but you should expect a few things you have to put up with.

NEW SAFETY FEATURE IS A DOWNGRADE!

We have used the old version of this roaster and love it. We recently bought the new version with the “SAFETY” feature. Not a fan of it at all. You have to babysit this thing or it will automatically go into cool mode. Planning to look for another roaster that does not require you to sit at it’s side the whole time! Not sure what this whole safety thing is all about, I don’t have to stand at my oven to bake. In my opinion this is a down grade to the roaster.

Got a lemon

This is my 3rd Gen. Cafe roaster. Their 1st one, black, lasted for over 5, maybe 10 years. The 2nd 1 lasted only 2 to 3 years. This last replacement has not worked and I am sending it back. It does not get up to temperature before the cooling mechanism turns on after about 10 minutes. It does not even warm it to the 1st crack. I am eager to hear back from your representatives so that I can send it back. So sorry for a bad review. The brand has served me well in the past.
